REGISTRY OF EFFICACY AND EFFECTIVENESS STUDIES

Increasing Transparency and Access in Education and the Social Sciences

WHAT IS THE REGISTRY?

The Registry of Efficacy and Effectiveness Studies (REES) is a database of causal inference studies in education and related social science fields. REES is designed to increase the transparency of and access to information about both ongoing and completed impact studies. Unlike other registries, REES easily accommodates a range of study designs including randomized trials, quasi-experimental design studies, regression discontinuity design studies, and single case design studies. The REES database is searchable and exportable.

TIMING OF STUDY REGISTRATION

Ideally study registration will be completed during the design phase and, subsequently, registrations will be updated by an authorized member of the research team as changes in the design occur and/or study products and findings become available. We strongly encourage registration of studies in the design phase. However, in order to maximize the utility of REES, we encourage registration of all in-process and completed studies, as well. All entries and updates to entries are time-stamped.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN A REES ENTRY?

A registry entry includes basic study information and pre-analysis plans. There are 8 sections including:

  1. General Study Information,
  2. Description of Study,
  3. Research Questions,
  4. Study Design,
  5. Sample Characteristics,
  6. Outcomes,
  7. Analysis Plans, and
  8. Additional Materials (e.g. contact information for study directors, references for and links to companion documents and completed reports, and systematic reviews that reference the study findings, and information on availability of study data).

WHAT IS DEMO MODE? (In Development)

Demo mode is for individuals who want to explore REES before committing to registration of a study. Demo Mode includes all the features of the program, but it does not require a login and will not save the entry. Demo mode is useful for individuals who want to explore REES without creating an account (e.g., graduate students in methods courses, workshop participants).

Note: An alternative is to initiate a study registration using the regular program. You will be allowed to save drafts of a study registration. The study registration information is not formally added to the registry database until the user submits the registration document.

INTEGRATION OF DATA FROM THE WHAT WORKS CLEARINGHOUSE

Until its most recent web update, the What Works Clearinghouse maintained a Registry of Randomized Controlled Trials in Education. The registry information from that database will be integrated into REES. Because REES contains additional data fields, study directors will be encouraged to edit the imported entries to reflect changes in study design and complete data fields that are unique to REES.

Some principal investigators for studies registered with the What Works Clearinghouse have completed a REES registration. Others have not.
